Introduction
The OPEN CHANNEL VIDEO SLAM is an instant video production and rights management workshop! It provides a format for producing screen content with open licensed assets within the shortest possible time. In the case of the founding VIDEO SLAM project, up to 48 hours is all it can take to produce a 10 minute short film from start to finish.
VIDEO SLAM is an exercise in cross-discipline collaboration focused on the use of flexible licenses for the creation of new works that are shared within the public domain. These new works are then available under the same licenses from which the original content was sourced from.
Background
The first OPEN CHANNEL VIDEO SLAM, 5 Smiles, was held over a period of 48 hours, from 10am Sunday May 13 to 8pm Monday May 14, at Horse Bazaar. Filmmakers, writers, programmers, sound and video artists slammed out a 10-minute digital short from content found largely online.
The final work was screened at Horse Bazaar and Federation Square on Monday 14 May, and was followed by a free seminar with the VIDEO SLAM artists, with lawyer Shaun Miller, and Creative Commons Clinic participant, Elliot Bledsoe. The forum was hosted by VIDEO SLAM Producer, Andrew Garton.
5 Smiles consisted of 110 individually accredited samples. These included sounds, stills and video content . In addition, material shot on location, throughout the Melbourne CBD, was produced for re-release under the same licence as Five Smiles was released.
VIDEO SLAM Workshop
The second OPEN CHANNEL VIDEO SLAM: Appropriate Original, commences with a two day workshop (21 - 22 May 2008) where participants will learn how to incorporate Creative Commons licensed content into a short film produced on site at Horse Bazaar.
Nineteen participants, with a range of screen production skills, will form up to four production teams producing up to 2.5 minutes of content each. Members of each team will assist in compiling found assets and along with a representative from the Creative Commons Clinic, will ensure the accuracy and legality of re-use of these works.
Participants will be provided with a key theme from which they are to develop individual commentaries on the overall theme of appropriation in the arts.
The finished works, including all left over assets, will be screened at the VIDEO SLAM: Appropriate Original Remix Forum (22 May 2008) to be further re-appropriated into a live re-mix of the event.

Remix Forum
Incorporated into the second VIDEO SLAM is a forum discussing appropriated hybrid artworks and the laws that may govern what can and can't be digitally consumed on and offline.
The forum itself is proposed to be appropriated into a remix of materials collated for the VIDEO SLAM short and other materials provided by participating artists. The remix artist is Melbourne VJ, John Burton.
Panellists
The Remix forum will be hosted by Andrew Garton. Panellists include:
- Shaun Miller - Marshalls & Dent
- Elliott Bledsoe - Creative Commons Clinic
- Shiralee Saul - Curator, Educator, Creative Media Research Journalist
- Emile Zile - Artist
Panellists Brief
The VIDEO SLAM Appropriate Original forum is targeting hybrid media artists, in particular screen culture practitioners, in a lively, entertaining discussion on appropriation in the arts, how it contributes to the work of an artist, culture in general and the legal frameworks that protect both the artists and the works they may consume.
The question at the heart of the forum is:
If appropriation has been at the heart of the growth, maturity and development of so many traditional cultures, without the legal protections that ensure the rights of the artist are protected for example, where does culture live and grow without the legal processes that seemingly hinder its development outside of commercial concerns and gains?
Panellists will provide a brief introduction to their practice which may be verbal or by way of material that may be screened. It should be noted that all materials screened should be available for re-appropriation into a video remix of the forum.
Panellists may comment on the works produced by VIDEO SLAM workshop participants and discuss the legal outcomes of these works, in particular the use of Creative Commons licenses.
We will look at various tools and delivery platforms available to artists that assist in remix, re-appropriation of various forums of cultural content. These may include projects such as sCrAmBlEd?HaCkZ! (previewed at Rights Online, Arts Law Week 2007), ccMixter and sites such as Freesound and EngageMedia.

Notes
Legal issues
- What are the new laws and regulations regarding the use and filming of public places and people?
- There is an idea to focus on the new laws that may prevent such use of public video from taking place at all.
