Background
The Wendish Heritage Society of Australia commissioned the Wendish Heritage website in 2006. It was created using multiple instances of the Moveable Type content management system. It was done so as it was the most affordable means to create a multiple category website that met the requirements of the Society.
In the intervening years publishing platforms have improved significantly making it both less complex to create and manage websites. It is with this in mind that a rebuild of the Wendish Heritage Society has been proposed.
Brief
The primary goal of this rebuild is to ensure that maintaining the site becomes easier for the Society. Secondary goals include providing new functionality as covered in the requirements section below.
The site would utilise existing artwork where applicable, import content from the current site into the new content management system and respond to each of the requirements as set out below.
Requirements
The following requirements are based on correspondence with the Wendish Heritage Society and are separated into two development stages.
Stage 1
- New CMS to be installed (eg: Wordpress)
- Current site's appearance is to be maintained where possible
- Current site's content areas to be maintained (news, calendar, maps, newsletters, histories, names, etc)
- Re-implement the site's forum function to provide community discussions while ensuring anti-spam measures are in place
- Re-implement the ability for site visitors to post comments while ensuring anti-spam measures are in place
- Implement a new photo gallery that supports key word searches and / or category listings
- Transfer the existing site's content from the old CMS to the new one
Stage 2
An additional requirement has been raised to provide online searchable access to the Wendish Heritage Society's databases, specifically the Library Catalogue. At this stage it is likely that the other databases will not be made available to the general public as they are a source of revenue to the Society.
This requirement is to be treated as a separate project to ensure that it can be properly assessed & implemented without delaying the primary goal of the CMS conversion project.
